Elastomeric roof coatings: choosing a system

Elastomeric describes a coating’s ability to stretch and recover. It does not identify one chemistry or prove that the product is right for a particular roof.

Ask for the chemistry and specification

A proposal saying only “elastomeric coating” leaves important decisions unanswered. Request the product name, substrate-specific specification, required primer and detail treatments. Compare acrylic and silicone requirements rather than treating the category as a single product.

Evaluate the roof before the finish

  • Existing roof and previous coating identification.
  • Condition of seams, curbs, drains and transitions.
  • Moisture concerns and any planned removal.
  • Preparation, adhesion evidence and inspection records.

Write down the selection rationale

A defensible choice explains which observed conditions support the system and which issues require work first. Use specification questions to turn a product discussion into a documented scope.

This is planning information, not a site assessment or installation procedure. Use current product documents, qualified personnel and site-specific requirements for a project decision.
